Session I: Brain Development
In the session “Brain Development”, speakers will give an overview of the current state of knowledge with respect to structural and functional brain development. They will cover the latest advances in the field of intellectual development, memory and learning, and emotion control. This session will set the stage for discussion of methods and applications.

Session II: Methods
In the “Methods” section, speakers will highlight the methodological challenges of imaging a child’s brain. They will discuss how performance differences may influence our interpretation of brain activation differences, and will cover conceptual challenges in interpreting developmental brain imaging data. This session will be directed at defining methodological and conceptual difficulties that will be discussed in the following sessions.

In the “Plasticity/Training” session, speakers will discuss research that highlights the potential and limitations in imaging brain changes across development within the areas of working memory, reading and intellectual functions more generally. This session will focus on single time point versus longitudinal measurements and the interpretation of brain activation in both scenarios.

In the last session, “Child Psychiatry”, experts in brain imaging of deviant brain development will discuss the possibilities and challenges of brain imaging in atypical populations. Speakers will discuss how the methodological challenges from the preceding sessions are relevant to the interpretation of brain imaging in atypical development.
